چکیده

The present paper is concerned with combustion of an initially spherical kernel of cold fuel, which in a hot oxidizing atmosphere is suddenly put into motion. The investigations are within the framework of an axisymmetric geometry and the flame-sheet model. After a brief description of the aerodynamics of the burning process, including deformation and breakup of the fuel kernel, attention is focused on the study of the combustion time t9comb, which by definition is the time required to consume practically all the fuel. First, the case of zero heat release is addressed. It is found that—due to deformation and straining of isoscalar surfaces—the direct dependence of the combustion time on the magnitude of the diffusivity of heat and matter decreases rapidly as the Reynolds number, Re, is increased. In particular, the combustion time t9comb becomes independent of the magnitude of the diffusivity as soon as the Reynolds number exceeds a few hundred. In this high-Re regime, t9comb is found to be proportional to the convective time t9conv multiplied by the square root of the density ratio, Eq. 17. Next, the influence of heat release on the combustion time is studied. It is found that at high Reynolds numbers the combustion time increases with increasing heat release. This increase is found to be essentially due to the decrease of the scalar gradients, which in turn is caused by the gas expansion due to heat release. Furthermore, the effect of heat release on the vorticity distribution is studied, and the relative importance of baroclinicity and gas expansion on the vorticity production is assessed. Finally, the influence of the stoichiometry of the reaction on the combustion time is briefly discussed. © 1998 by The Combustion Institute

Observations of soot during droplet combustion at low gravity: heptane and heptane/monochloroaIkane mixtures

Experimental observations of the combustion of sooting fuel droplets, performed in a drop tower to create a low gravity environment, are reported. Free n-heptane droplets and suspended droplets of heptane. monochloroalkanes. and mixtures of monochloro-octane and heptane were studied. Initial droplet diameters ranged from 0.4 to I. 1 mm. The results suggest that soot may influence droplet vapori...

Flue Gases Treatment by Irradiation with Electron Beam in the Presence of Fine Water Droplets

This paper presents the experimental results obtained during the irradiation process with electron beam of flue gases generated by burning fuel with a high content in sulphur. The ALIN-10 accelerator was used for generating the electron beam. The necessary water was sprayed into the gaseous mixture as fine droplets by the mist pump. The highest removal efficiencies were obtained in the presence...

بررسی اثر تخلخل در احتراق پیش مخلوط جریان متقابل در ابر ذرات ارگانیک

Due to the increasing need for a more realistic analysis of flame, in this study, the premixed counter flow flames propagation in the uniform mixture of organic porous particles and air is studied. Because of size equality assumption of the porous particles, lycopodium particles at this research are assumed. This analysis framework is thermal-diffusion model with this assumption that the lewis...

A revised spray-combustion diagram of diffusion-controlled burning regimes in fuel-spray clouds

Fuel droplets in combustors interact strongly with flames and turbulence in practical liquid-fueled combustors of terrestrial and aerial propulsion systems (Williams 1965; Sirignano 1999). Although a great deal of physical understanding has been achieved in purely gaseous combustion over the last century, not much is currently known about spray combustion at the fundamental level. In this short...

Spray Combustion at Normal and Reduced Gravity in Counterflow and Co-flow Configurations

Liquid fuel dispersion in practical systems is typically achieved by spraying the fuel into a polydisperse distribution of droplets evaporating and burning in a turbulent gaseous environment In view of the nearly insurmountable difficulties of this two-phase flow, a systematic study of spray evaporation and burning in configurations of gradually increasing levels of complexity, starting from la...
